More Kung Fu Fighting from Slugfest
Since we knew Slugfest was going to be at Dexcon, I wanted to get any updates on products and perhaps take more detailed look at Red Dragon Inn or Tiki Mountain. I'd initially seen these at Origins 2006 but did not have the time to sit down and play them. But I have to admit, when I got the opportunity to demo More Kung Fu Fighting, the upcoming expansion to one of my favorite card games, Kung Fu Fighting, I decided the rest of the stuff could wait.
We first saw Kung Fu Fighting at Origins 2005 and, as indicated above, I fell in love with the game. It's fast paced, it's easy to learn, and it lends itself to the slightly sarcastic, mildly provoking, "look at me be an ass hole to you" style of play I enjoy. This street runs both ways, but as I play games for enjoyment, it is still fun to play, even when you don't win. Granted, a run of three (3) or four (4) losses can be frustrating, but they are all erased when you declare the last hand "Champion of the World" and win. Especially if you win buy just a point or two.
Yes, I am aware I have deep emotional issues.
So you have an idea as to why I was so excited about More Kung Fu Fighting. The expansion does not change the game drastically. It does extend the play style and adds the following:
- Archetypes - These are either selected or randomly dealt and give you benefits to stances, attacks, weapons, defenses, etc.
- Finishing Moves - The last move in a combo- only one (1) of these per attack
- Stance Enhancements - you know, the enhancing of the stance thing
- Weapon Enhancements - as above, but with the weapon
- New Stances, Weapons, Attacks, etc. - What? There's a question on this?
- Team play - Yep, you can now team up and support your team member with stances and weapons, etc
- A stance marker - This is so folks like me don't have to squint and ask "What stance are you in?"
- A new play mat to accommodate the changes
We played a couple of games and had a blast. The Archetypes were an interesting addition and even though I only used my once, when I used it, it was way cool. The finishing moves extend the irreverence of the game, the stance and weapon enhancements are very interesting and really add to the game.
Like most good expansions, More Kung Fu Fighting does not change the game in a sustentative manner. Rather it knocks play into another dimension while leaving the core rules intact. Anyone familiar with Kung Fu Fighting can glance at the expansion cards and be playing the game in less than five (5) Minutes.
If you are going to Gencon 2006, stop by and say hello and beg, beg, beg, to play the expansion. You can tell them Pugilist sent you, but I wouldn't recommend it.
